New Providence Baptist Church was organized in 1848 according to the minutes of the Friendship Association (In 1972 when the church letter was read before the congregation for approval before sending in to the Associational Office, Mrs. Cornelia Helms stated she thought the year was 1842 or 1843. Decision was made to leave it as printed in associational minutes. At times instructions for the church report to the office states to correct any information that is needed. That could've been read as eight. In 1997 this figure was changed to 1843 in the report sent in on the basis of information obtained in the early nineties as follows: Land was purchased from Matthew McCrary - the deed says in part, "grant, bargain, sell and convey and confirm unto the said James Brantley, Harris Brantley, and Henry Camp to their successors in office as trustees of this Baptist of Christ at New Providence, all that parcel of land whereon the said church now stands containing two (2) acres more or less." these words indicate that a church building was already on the property in 1842 and it was known as "this Baptist Church of Christ at New Providence" and that James Brantley, Harris Brantley and Henry Camp were the trustees of the original church at this time. This leaves unanswered, the question of when and how the church was started. The original deed of 1842 did not give any specific location for the two (2) acres more or less, except that they were in Land Lot 72 of the Fourth District. Then in 1902, W.H. and M.E. Sales granted a deed which pinpointed the location as follows: "Commencing at Southeast corner of white cemetery, running North 75 yards on East side, 175 yards running due West, thence South 70 yards to the public road and the South line being the Tazewell-Brantley Road." this deed gave the right-of-way to the spring and pool South of the church, the pool being the old Baptismal Pool located approximately 200 yards below the new section of paved road. The pool is now very difficult to get to and almost filled with soft mud. The steps, sides, and bottom which were made of heart pine lumber are no longer visible. However, they are still there and can be felt by poking with a stick. The water can be seen flowing into the pool with no visible evidence of any flow of water out. (Mr. Dam Helms had checked this in the late eighties.) Mrs. Aurie McCorkle remembers the day in 1914 when seventeen people were baptized in this pool, one of them being herself. In 1914 a new church building was built and dedicated in August, 1914. The old building was torn down. It was located very close to the road and in the area which is now the western third of the cemetery or newer part. Electric lights came in 1937. This building was remodeled on the inside in 1963 (paneling and ceiling) and bricked in 1971. A two-story addition was added in 1975, providing Sunday School rooms, a fellowship area with baptismal Pool. Many improvements have been added along, some of the major ones being a well, restrooms, and a new piano (1978), sound system. At one time worship services were held once a month (Saturday and Sunday I'm told BMC) then twice a month until January 1977 when services each Sunday began. A new Fellowship Hall was dedicated September 29, 1993 to the rear of the church building, old one being converted to a Nursery/Sunday School area. In the spring a Baptismal Pool was added in the sanctuary and another two-story area added. May 1993 sign in front of the church was installed and completed by Mr. Bibb and Betty Golden as memorial of family members. December 1996 a plan for a Sunday School Annex was voted to begin. This building was

completed and first used March 29, 1997 on Easter Sunday and dedicated September 29, 1997. A used bus was purchased September 6, 1999 and replaced several years later with a van. A storage building was purchased November 11, 1998. A new sound system voted December 6, 1998 replacing older one. A piano in memory of Mrs. Louise Brooks was given to be in a place for practice sessions and other use. After steadily growing we realized we needed more room and the church made a commitment February 13, 2000 to plan to start a new sanctuary. After several presentations, plans were presented March 11, 2001 and accepted by the church body. Meantime, a new roof was installed on the old building September 1, 2001. Parking lot was paved around all buildings in January 2003, a 6-foot Baby grand Yamaha Piano was voted to be purchased from funds on January 26, 2003 to be installed at and the sound system was set up. Began worshiping in the new sanctuary February 21, 2003 with dedication March 1, 2003. Pastors and officers over the years has been: Bro. W.P. Allison pastor, Bro. W.A.
